Unforgettable

It was eleven years ago this month that my Grandpa Hoch passed away. He was a kind man who loved kids. It was a good thing, too. He had about 20 grandchildren. When we all got together it was always a big party. When Steve and I were little, we sometimes stayed for a week at Grandma and Grandpa's house during the summer. I remember Grandpa riding three wheeler with us and making a swing on a big tree in the woods. Sometimes we would help him in the garden. At night we would sit out on the back porch and eat ice cream, and he would tell us stories about things that happened in his life while the sounds of crickets filled the surrounding forest. He was an honorable man who served his country during World War II. The years have been passing fast since he left us in 1994, but the memories we created with him will live on forever.

It's always amazing to me how the time you have with your loved one seems so much longer than the time you've been without them. My grandma died when I was 14, and she's been gone 10 years...but it seems like only yesterday I was sitting at her table, working on a craft project with her and shooting the breeze. Thank goodness for the gift of memory.
