An Epiphany

"...(2): an intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an event) usually simple and striking (3) : an illuminating discovery b : a revealing scene or moment."

A few years ago as I was waking for work I experienced a special moment. It was just as early light was beginning to subtly break through the darkness of a frigid, winter's night. As I headed off to the shower through my darkened room the twilight from the window caught my eye, and for some unusual reason I felt drawn to look outside. Everything was quiet and peaceful as I scanned the scene, no lights shining from nearby neighbors; everyone seemed fast asleep. Limbs from the trees outside my window framed a view that opened up onto distant fields and the cold, clear, western sky. It was in this moment that it seemed I was an audience of one to a sight that so many people were missing...a special experience that I never forgot and was later inspired to write a poem about. Isn't it interesting how something ordinary can turn into something special when all the conditions are just right?
